Uhuru attends high level briefing session on Ethiopia peace process
Former President of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta, joined other African Union High-Level Panel members in a virtual meeting on Thursday, February 9 2023.
The meeting focused on updating the panel on the progress of the AU-led Ethiopia peace process.
Led by former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, the meeting was informed by Political Affairs, Peace and Security Commissioner of the African Union, Bankole Adeoye, about the peaceful occupation of Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, by Ethiopian Defense forces.
The move is part of the terms of the 2nd November Pretoria peace agreement, which calls for the disarmament of Tigray forces and the restoration of federal authority in the region.
Although the meeting noted that essential services, including air transportation and telecommunication, have been gradually restored, schools remain closed and the cost of living is still high in the region.
The panel appreciated the achievements made since their last visit to Tigray, where they launched the African Union Monitoring, Verification, and Compliance Mission.
The panel members commended both the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front for their commitment to the AU-led peace process and their efforts in restoring long-lasting peace in the region.
