Uhuru among EAC leaders meeting Pres. Tshisekedi over conflict in DRC

In an effort to bring about peace in the eastern part of the country, leaders from the East African Community (EAC) have traveled to Kinshasa for high-level consultations with  the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Félix Tshisekedi.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, the coordinator of the peace process in the Eastern DRC, left for the high-level meetings on Sunday.

The talks will also be attended by Évariste Ndayishimiye, the president of the Republic of Burundi and the chair of the EAC Heads of State Summit, and Dr. Peter Mathuki, the EAC Secretary General.

The EAC-led peace process has reenergized the inter-Congolese dialogue to include local community leaders and stakeholders in order to find a comprehensive solution to the ongoing security situation.

The meeting takes place a week after the Summit of EAC Heads of State held a High-Level Consultative Meeting on the peace process in Eastern DRC in Shamar El Sheikh, Egypt, in order to strengthen the political track.

On November 4, 2022, former President Uhuru Kenyatta spoke with President Ndayishimiye in Burundi about the peace process in the Eastern DRC.

The meeting presided over by Évariste Ndayishimiye, made a commitment that all seven EAC Partner States would now participate fully in the process, with each Head of State sending a technical advisor to assist the EAC Peace Process Facilitator.

The Heads of State of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Republic of Uganda, the Republic of Kenya, and the Republic of Rwanda reaffirmed their commitment to making contributions to the EAC Special Fund for the implementation of the peace process and urged all Partner States to sustainably support the facility.

Currently, contributions have been made to the EAC special fund for the implementation of the peace process by the African Union and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).

The EAC will hold a peace summit at the end of the year to discuss, among other things, how to strengthen the complementary roles of the Luanda Process and the EAC-led peace process.

The next session of the peace dialogue on the security situation in Eastern DRC is scheduled to commence on 21st November 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.
