Uganda confirms Ebola outbreak, one person reported dead
The health authorities in Uganda on Tuesday declared an outbreak of Ebola after a case of the relatively rare Sudan strain was confirmed in Mubende district in the central part of the country.
The Uganda Virus Research Institute confirmed the case after testing a sample taken from a 24-year-old male. This follows an investigation by the National Rapid Response team of six suspicious deaths that have occurred in the district this month. There are currently eight suspected cases who are receiving care in a health facility.
“This is the first time in more than a decade that Uganda is recording the Ebola Sudan strain. We are working closely with the national health authorities to investigate the source of this outbreak while supporting the efforts to quickly roll out effective control measures,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa.
In a statement to district health officers, a director at Mubende Regional referral hospital, where the first case was reported called for calm in health facilities and observance of stern precautionary and infection prevention measures.
“Renew your knowledge and increase level of suspicion for VHF,” the director said.
Ebola virus disease (EVD) is a deadly disease with occasional outbreaks and was first reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 near the Ebola River. EVD most commonly affects people and nonhuman primates (such as monkeys, gorillas, and chimpanzees). It is caused by an infection with a group of viruses within the genus Ebolavirus.
The virus first spreads to people through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, and tissues of animals. Ebola virus then spreads to other people through direct contact with the body fluids of a person who is sick with or has died from EVD. This can occur when a person touches these infected body fluids or objects that are contaminated with them.
The virus then gets into the body through broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, or mouth. People can get the virus through sexual contact with someone who is sick with or has recovered from EVD. The virus can persist in certain body fluids, like semen, after recovery from the illness.
Uganda has had four Ebola outbreaks in 2,000, 2014, 2017, and 2018. The biggest and most deadly was in 2000, registering 425 cases and 224 deaths.
