UDA summons Karen Nyamu for disciplinary hearing following Dubai altercation
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Party has called upon nominated senator Karen Nyamu to attend a disciplinary hearing following a viral video that showed her in a public altercation at a party in Dubai.
According to a letter from the party, “Nyamu’s conduct brought shame, disrepute and lowered the dignity of the UDA party and injured its reputation”.
“Your conduct and mannerism as exhibited in that incident has brought shame, disrepute and lowered the dignity of the party which nominated you to the office of Senator,” the letter reads in part.
Charles Njenga, the chairperson of the UDA disciplinary committee, cited the party’s code of conduct and Nyamu’s oath of office in stating that her behavior in the incident was not in line with the expected conduct of a member serving in public office.
“Article 73 of the Constitution of Kenya as read together with the code of conduct of the party and your oath of office, delineate with clarity the expected conduct of a member of the party who has been afforded the opportunity to serve in public office, to represent the party at the Senate and the general public,” reads part of the letter.
Nyamu has been ordered to appear before the disciplinary committee on Friday, December 23 at 9:30am at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi.
She has the option to represent herself or appear with an advocate from the High Court of Kenya.
In the video that sparked the disciplinary action, Nyamu was seen engaging in a scuffle with Mugithi singer Samuel Muchoki and his wife Edith Nderitu.
Nyamu has since acknowledged her mistake and stated her intention to quit alcohol in 2023, which she blamed as a contributing factor to the altercation.
