U-turn? Evangelist Teresia Wairimu criticises Kenya Kwanza govt
Evangelist Teresia Wairimu, founder of Faith Evangelistic Ministries (FEM), a church where President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto have frequently worshipped, openly criticized the Kenya Kwanza government on Sunday, raising concerns about its leadership.
In her sermon, Wairimu reflected on the church’s initial support for President Ruto, stating that their confidence had waned.
“I know most of us were watching the television. We were so embarrassed, extremely embarrassed,” she remarked.
Wairimu criticised Members of Parliament (MPs) for prioritising discussions on the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua instead of focusing on economic growth.
She added that her future support for President Ruto in the next election would depend on careful consideration.
“As a voter, I’m embarrassed. In the next election, you must convince me. We are sick and tired of noise. We want performers, we want workers,” she said.
The Evangelist urged President Ruto to prioritise the nation’s interests and those who voted for him, warning that MPs who fail to deliver could face rejection in future elections. She also prayed for the removal of corruption and evil within the country, reminding leaders that Kenyans voted for peace, not conflict.
Evangelist Wairimu has been close to President Ruto’s family since 2012 and has a long-standing relationship with Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, with whom she has evangelised for many years. During the State House dedication service after Kenya Kwanza’s victory in 2022, Wairimu likened President Ruto’s humble ‘chicken seller’ beginnings to David from the Bible, who rose from tending sheep to become one of Israel’s greatest kings.
“We have our David right here in our midst. We thank God that he didn’t come looking like a king, he didn’t smell like one… when God handpicked you to be a leader of this nation at a time like this, I want us to understand that God qualifies the disqualified and raises the nobodies,” she said in her 2022 sermon.
Despite saying she faced intimidation during the campaign for supporting Ruto’s bid, she noted that their prayers were eventually answered.
Her criticism comes amid growing calls from religious leaders urging President Ruto to reconsider certain government projects, which they argue are becoming a burden to taxpayers.
In a joint statement last week, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) and Supkem expressed concerns over the shift from the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), which has left many Kenyans without adequate medical coverage. They also urged the President to cancel the new university funding model, claiming it has disadvantaged students from poor backgrounds due to poor communication about the model.
Faith Evangelistic Ministries, one of Nairobi’s prominent churches, attracts large congregations, including politicians. Its Sh1 billion sanctuary was officially launched in 2018 by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, with Rachel Ruto also in attendance.
