Heavy rains: Two die as mudslide sweeps homes in Bomet

Two people have died following a mudslide that destroyed the house they were sleeping in Bomet county.

This is after heavy rainfall that pounded major parts of the country from Friday night through Saturday, disrupting transport and business operations.

“The two middle-aged men were asleep when the incident occurred at Silibwet trading centre in Bomet Central constituency,” Musa Imamai, the Bomet Sub County Police Commander said.

It was discovered in the morning that the victims had been buried in the mudslide that affected an area that soil had been excavated and a petrol station constructed nearby.

Imamai said the bodies of the victims who lived in a temporary iron roofed and timber walled structure that was destroyed, had been taken to Longisa Sub-county hospital for preservation ahead of postmortem being conducted and subsequent release to next of kin for burial.

It comes days after a bridge in Chepalungu constituency was swept off by floods causing a major transport hitch in the area.

A makeshift footbridge has been erected by the residents to cross the Nyangores River in Kipsegon area where a Chinese contractor – China Civil Engineering – has suspended construction of a motorable bridge as a result of heavy rainfall.

Victor Koech, the Chepalungu Member of Parliament has called on the Chinese contractor – to immediately return to the site and put up a temporary footbridge to enable the residents to cross the swollen river.

“With schools set to be re-opened on Monday for the first term in the year, we are calling on the contractor to quickly return to the site and construct a temporary bridge to enable the residents and especially learners to cross the river when they are going to and from the various learning institutions in the area,” Koech said.

Koech said the contractor that also won the tender to upgrade the Kyogong-Sigor-Kaboson road to bitumen standards, one of the key infrastructure development planks of President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration in Bomet county, was slow in the implementation of the project.

“The contractor has been slow in mobilizing equipment to resume the construction work on the road after it was abandoned by former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee administration. We have taken up the matter with Roads and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen who has assured us that the works will resume in full swing” Koech said.

“I am appealing to residents of the area to use an alternative route in the interim as the contractor has promised to be on site in the next two days to put in place temporary measures that would allow pedestrians and motorists to cross the swollen river.

As a result of the transport hiccup, motorists have been forced to use a longer route – Kapkesosio – Kipisarwet – while travelling from Bomet to Sigor and back, thus incurring high costs in fare and maintenance of their vehicles.

The contractor is said to have been away for the last two months and has come under the spotlight for failing to make the area motorable as the major bridge is being constructed.
