Turkana: Police ambushed by suspected bandits, three officers killed
Three police officers were killed and several others injured in a brutal ambush by suspected bandits in Turkana County on Friday evening.
The attack took place along the Kitale-Lodwar highway, 5 km from the Kenya Wildlife Service Camp towards Kalong.
The officers, who were on patrol, were drawn from different branches of the police including the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), the General Service Unit, and regular police from Kainuk and Lokichar police stations.
The attack resulted in injuries to eight officers and a civilian passenger. They were rushed to Kainuk Health Centre and later referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Eldoret for further treatment.
The officers were evacuated from the scene by two armored personnel carriers.
In a subsequent visit to the scene on Saturday morning, a multi-agency team drawn from the GSU, RDU, and ASTU was once again attacked but managed to retrieve the bodies of the fallen officers.
According to police sources, the officers who lost their lives were stripped naked and their arms and uniforms were stolen.
Three police vehicles were also vandalized, with one of them being set on fire.
The police are now conducting investigations to determine the identity of the attackers and bring them to justice.
The attack came just a month after Interior CS Kindiki Kithure visited Turkana to assess the security situation and the general development of the area.
Kithure spoke of the government’s commitment to ensuring durable peace in the region, saying that it will facilitate the extension of the Kitale-Lodwar-Kakuma-Lokichogio-Nadapal road to Nakodoe and onward to Juba, South Sudan.
