Tuesday evening fires cause massive loses in Nairobi
Property of unknown value has been lost in a raging fire that broke out in Juakali market near the City Stadium, Nairobi Tuesday evening.
The massive fire believed to have originated from one of the stalls started around around 3pm, according to police sources.
“It started at 3pm. A flame was spotted in one of the stalls, they tried to look for a fire extinguisher in the surrounding buildings but none was found,” an officer told nation.africa.
As at 9:30 pm, the Nairobi City County fire brigade was battling the fire which had snaked into Muthurwa residential areas.
No injuries or fatalities had been reported from the fire incident which took combined efforts from the NCC team, the National Police Service and the General Service Unit (GSU) officers to contain.
Another officer who spoke to nation.africa disclosed that the Juakali market is notorious for manufacturing contraband fuel products which, together with gas cylinders stocked in the stalls, only worsened the situation.
Motorists using the Enterprise Road were forced to turn back as police cordoned off the area causing a huge traffic snarl up on Jogoo Road and Lusaka Road.
Law enforcers could be seen engaging in running battles with onlookers and groups of youths before the Kenya Red Cross team arrived to be on standby in the event of casualties.
The cause of the inferno which has left hundreds of Juakali operators counting losses is yet to be ascertained
