Traffic disruption on Uhuru Highway after section temporarily closed
There was traffic on Saturday after a section of Uhuru Highway in Nairobi County was closed for scheduled maintenance work.
The Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha) had earlier announced a temporary closure of sections from Friday night to Sunday evening.
In a notice dated March 7, the authority specified that the closure would affect the stretch between Harry Thuku Road and University Way (Mombasa bound).
Kenha announced that the closure would be effected beginning Friday at 11 pm until Sunday, March 10 at midnight.
Consequently, the road authority advised motorists intending to travel
“Kenha wishes to notify the Public that there will be a temporary closure of Uhuru Highway (A8) between Harry Thuku Road and University Way (Mombasa Bound) from 11.00 pm on Friday, March 8, 2024, to Midnight on Sunday, March 10, 2024. This is to allow for highway maintenance works at this section.
“All motorists accessing Uhuru Highway (A8) from Kenyatta Avenue will use alternative routes such as Harry Thuku Road and University Way,” part of the notice read. over the weekend to use alternative routes such as the University Way.
Uhuru Highway connects Waiyaki Way to Mombasa Road at the Nyayo Stadium Roundabout. It is part of the road where the Express Way passes through together with Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way.
In December 2023, the authority which is an autonomous road agency mandated to manage, develop, rehabilitate and maintain national roads temporarily closed five roundabouts along the Uhuru Highway.
The roundabouts – Nyayo Stadium, Bunyala, Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue, and University Way – were closed from December 28, until January 1, 2024.
The closure was to facilitate essential road maintenance works along the said stretches.
