Toe the line or ship out, Raila reiterates firm stance on ODM ‘rebels’

Merely hours after the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) kicked out ‘rebels’ from it’s party , ODM leader Raila Odinga has firmly asserted that political infidelity in the name of seeking favors will not be allowed.

“Loyalty, fidelity, and love for one another are the three main reasons political parties grow. ODM shall not condone political infidelity in the name of some members seeking cheap political favors from those in power,” Raila said.

During a political rally at the Maranatha Faith Assembly in Migori Town on Friday, September 8, Raila added that political parties are all in competition and there’s no way one can claim to seek development favors from another party simply because it is in the government.

He also asserted that political parties can only grow in Kenya if those in power respect the ideologies, constitutions, and rules of other parties.

According to ODM’s spokesperson Philip Etale, the move to kick out the MPs is part of Raila’s strategy to strengthen ODM’s grassroots networks as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.

Raila was joined by Azimio bigwigs, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, and Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko during his visit to Migori County.

Raila’s tour of Migori comes hours after he cracked the whip and expelled rebel MPs who are supporting the Kenya Kwanza administration.

The five ousted are Elisha Ochieng’ Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Tom Ojienda (Senator of Kisumu County), and Phelix Odiwuor Kodhe (Lang’ata).

The party also expelled four nominated MCAs from Kisumu County.

At the meeting were ODM grassroots leaders from across all the constituencies in Migori County.

Weighing in on ODM cracking the whip, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua voiced his skepticism, saying, “Raila is insincere in his push for national dialogue. He seeks to engage with President William Ruto while simultaneously penalizing leaders who interact with the same President.”

In a statement read by ODM national chairman John Mbadi on September 6, the party leader Raila Odinga directed the commencement of the removal of the expelled MPs from the register.

Members of Parliament (MPs) including Elisha Odhiambo (Gem), Caroli Omondi (Suba South), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Felix Odiwuor, alias Jalang’o (Langata), and Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda were among those kicked out of the party for associating with President William Ruto

“The members are deemed to have resigned from the ODM,” Mbadi said.

Mbadi further announced that MPs Mark Nyamita (Uriri) and Paul Abuor (Rongo) should offer an apology to the party and pay a Sh1 million fine. Mbadi clarified that Nyamita and Abuor appeared before the Disciplinary Committee in person and offered explanations that were considered by the committee, hence they were spared from expulsion. Women Representative Esther Pasaaris was fined a hefty amount of Sh 250,000 for defying the party and voting in favor of the Finance Act.
