To err is human: CS Kuria ‘apologises’ for fuel remarks

Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria has ‘apologised’ for his recent blistering remarks on skyrocketing fuel prices.

In a loaded statement, Kuria publicly apologised to “Dr Boni Khalwale and his master” for his posts on the fuel economy in which he speculated that prices will only go up before they get better.

In a tweet laced with a tone of sarcasm, Kuria wrote, “Dear Kenyans. On Friday, 15th September, I made some comments indicating that the price of fuel is likely to go up in the coming months owing to global dynamics. I have since been advised by people like Dr. Boni Khalwale and his master that the statement was incorrect, insensitive, and ARROGANT. I am made to now understand that the price will come down. I apologize profusely since to err is human.”

Kuria’s earlier statement on fuel highlighted that fuel stocks scheduled for August would not be available until October, and similarly, stocks expected in September would be delayed until November. This implied that the delays in the supply chain could have significant implications for pricing and availability.

The controversial comments came amid growing public concern over skyrocketing fuel prices in Kenya, which have caused hardship for many citizens. Kuria warned that the price of petrol could reach Sh260 by February.

Senate Majority Leader Boni Khalwale had earlier called on President William Ruto to reshuffle his cabinet to address the rising cost of living.

“The people you (President Ruto) hired have put you in a tight corner; Trade Minister, Energy Minister and your economic advisers,” he said.

Khalwale argued that the government-to-government oil deal with the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to supply fuel for nine months had not yielded positive results and had instead burdened the Kenyan people.

According to him, the rising cost of fuel and living is tarnishing the reputation of President Ruto in the grassroots.

On Sunday, Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua clarified that the statements made by some leaders did not represent the official position of President William Ruto’s government.

“I would like to remind them that although the people of Kenya did not employ them directly, they decisively elected H.E President William Ruto, who in turn appointed them Cabinet Secretaries and Advisors. And hence by virtue of this – they are employed by Kenyans. You Do Not address your employer with arrogance. Do so with Humility and Decorum. Kenyans, like the rest of the world, are going through difficult economic times, and leaders should address them with Sensitivity and Empathy,” Gachagua shared via X.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) recently announced updated fuel prices, with petrol at Sh211.64, diesel at Sh200.99, and kerosene at Sh202.61 in Nairobi. These prices reflect significant increases compared to the previous month.
