Tiny yellow car with a big message: Ruto’s symbolic statement
President William Ruto, known for his skilful use of similes and symbolic gestures, recently made headlines when he drove himself through the streets of Nairobi in a small yellow electric car.
The unconventional commute, which many would be quick to dismiss as a publicity stunt, was a bold statement as the country hosts the first-ever African Climate Summit, which has kicked off in Nairobi and will run from today Monday 4 to Wednesday 6 September.
Ruto’s solo drive around Nairobi took him to the Kenya International Convention Centre (KICC), the venue of the much-anticipated climate summit, an event that aims to address the pressing issue of climate change.
What made Ruto’s trip even more unusual was his all-electric motorcade, which included electric motorbikes. This fleet of eco-friendly vehicles escorted him to and from the summit venue in what State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed said was symbolic of President Ruto’s commitment to lead by example in the continent’s initiative to reduce carbon footprint.
“President Ruto leads by example, driving himself to KICC in an electric car and an all-electric motorcade to connect with Africa’s Youth on their climate declaration ahead of the Africa Climate Summit tomorrow,” he said.
The electric car used by President Ruto, the Autopax AirEv Yetu Pro, is locally manufactured and can travel 300 kilometres on a full charge. Autopax Electric, the company behind these vehicles, offers two different models: the Autopax AirEv Yetu, with a range of 200 kilometres on a full charge, and the Autopax AirEv Yetu Pro, with an extended range of 300 kilometres.
The company recently signed an engineering services and partnership agreement with Chinese manufacturer SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile Limited (SGMW) on 21 June. This agreement cemented the collaboration between the two entities and the electric vehicles have now made their way to Kenya for pre-launch trials, according to Autopax CEO Joy Kalua.
Small electric cars, similar to the one President Ruto drove, cost around Sh1.7 million making them a more accessible option as the price of fuel cars skyrockets amid a strengthening dollar.
