Three Tanzanian fishermen rescued after being stranded at sea for 3 days
Three Tanzanian fishermen who were stranded at sea for three days and two nights were rescued by a cargo ship and arrived safely at the port of Mombasa last evening.
The three men, Hafith Abdalla, Musa Silima, and Silimani Zidini, set sail early Saturday morning on a non-motorized canoe for a fishing expedition. However, their journey took a turn for the worse when their canoe capsized during a heavy storm.
The men’s canoe was swept off by the storm and they were tossed into the raging waters.
“The fishermen lost control over the canoe and with the shore being tens of nautical miles away, they resigned to their fate drifting deep into the sea by wind and tide,” the DCI said.
The fishermen reportedly battled through the storm and made it back to their canoe, but without their paddles, they were left drifting at the whim of the wind and tide.
The canoe and its stranded passengers were discovered on Monday night by the captain of the bulk carrier MV Ince Atlantic while it was in Kenyan territorial waters. The captain informed the Kenya Ports Authority control tower of the situation, and was given the go-ahead to assist the three men and disembark them in Mombasa.
The ship’s crew members ferried the terrified trio to the Mombasa port’s outer port limits after rescuing them and providing them with food, water, clothing, and a place to sleep.
After speaking with the three men, it was determined that they were Tanzanian citizens. The Tanzanian consular was immediately informed.
Plans are being made, according to DCI, to ensure that they are returned home and reunited with their families.
