Kakamega: Three people killed on suspicion of witchcraft
An elderly couple and a witchdoctor were brutally killed by angry residents of Duka Moja village in Kakamega County, on suspicion of practising witchcraft.
Angry villagers raided the home of 59-year-old Arnold Ambuchi and beat him up to death together with his 54-year-old wife Seraphine Muloki before lynching the couple’s 60 year-old-guest, Ayub Lusweti – a suspected witchdoctor from Matete village in Lugari constituency.
It is reported that upon learning of the witchdoctor’s presence in the village, angry villagers of Duka Moja stormed the home where he was allegedly performing the rituals and attacked him with machetes alongside his hosts.
Some Duka Moja villagers who spoke to Nation on condition of anonymity blamed Ayub of being behind a spate of mysterious deaths in the village through his craft. They also accused him of bewitching their school-going children.
However, the deceased’s relatives dismissed the allegations as baseless.
Josiah Juma, an uncle said Ayub was neither a killer nor a dangerous man.
“There are several ways one can earn a living and its acceptable in the laws of Kenya. My nephew was just doing his job unfortunately it cost him his life,” explained Mr Juma.
Grief-stricken relatives of the alleged witchdoctor led by his widowed wife Dorcas Mukhwana said the old man had been invited by the couple to conduct some rituals at their home and that he was an innocent man earning a living nobly.
“Just like any other day when he is going out to work, he did not disclose to me where he was heading to. However, when he failed to return home after two days I got suspicious because it was unlike him,” Ms Mukhwana said.
The deceased’s elder brother Luka Lusweti, said they received information from a relative, two days after Ayub had gone missing, that his lifeless body had been discovered at a bush in Malava.
“My brother was killed without any mistake. He was a family man trying to eke out a living. If his killers felt that he was involved in something illegal, they should have apprehended him and handed him over to the authorities instead of taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
A father of seven, Ayub had often visited the home, where he was killed, for a similar mission.
Confirming the incident Kakamega County police commander Joseph Kigen said that his officers had already launched investigation into the incident and would soon bring to book those who lynched the trio.
The three bodies were later moved to Kakamega County Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem
