Three arrested in possession of elephant tusks in Kisumu
Three men, including two foreigners, were arrested in Kisumu, Kenya after being found in possession of eight pieces of elephant tusks weighing 16kg, with an estimated street value of over KES 500,000.
The suspects, Wilson Korio, 52, and Tanzanians Jakaya Mchubo Paswa, 42, and Lemintiye Mbukoti, 27, were taken into custody after detectives received a tip and, accompanied by Kenya Wildlife Service personnel, arrested the suspects in Mamboleo.
During the arrest, a fourth suspect on a motorbike attempted to rescue the prisoners using a metal bar, but was shot by the officers on his arms as he fled the scene.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody and are set to be arraigned in court on Tuesday morning.
The illegal trade of animal trophies, including elephant tusks, is a major issue in many parts of Africa, with these items often smuggled out of the country and sold on the black market for significant profits.
