Thieves stealing from Kapenguria hospital caught, says West Pokot Governor
The West Pokot County Government has apprehended thieves who have been stealing money from Kapenguria County referral hospital. West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin noted that some individuals had been stealing money from the patient payment system at the County hospital. He mentioned that over ten people had been arrested and taken to court.
“We have people who have been colluding to steal money that was being collected in the hospital every day. They are our sons but will serve as an example to others,” he said.
He added that after stealing the funds, they erase the information with the help of an Information Technology (IT) expert.
“You can’t trace the money, but we have managed to arrest them. If you pay cash, they take it randomly,” he said.
Kachapin said that they have put measures in place to curb the theft.
“They take the money and share it immediately,” he said.
The Governor pledged to crack down on the architects of the theft of funds in public health facilities.
Speaking on Tuesday while presiding over the inauguration of West Pokot County Facility Improvement Fund board members, Kachapin noted that his administration envisions a healthcare system that prioritizes prevention, early intervention, and holistic care to improve healthcare outcomes and enhance the overall well-being of the community.
He said that the new board members would oversee and guide healthcare initiatives in the county’s referral and sub-county hospitals.
“Their goal is to ensure that every resident has access to quality healthcare services that are equitable, affordable, and inclusive,” said Kachapin.
The County boss acknowledged that the board members’ expertise, experience, and passion for the sector would undoubtedly play a vital role in shaping the future of the county’s healthcare system.
“We have full confidence in their ability to make well-informed decisions that will positively impact the health and wellness of our county,” he said.
He urged them to fully collaborate with the health department and relevant parties to promote healthcare reforms.
“Improving access to affordable healthcare was an indispensable plank in his vision and transformative agenda. During my inauguration, I promised West Pokot residents quality, affordable, and accessible healthcare as a priority,” Kachapin said.
He said his administration was keen to ensure the sick were treated with respect and are not denied services and referred to private facilities for diagnosis, whereas services are available in public hospitals.
“We want Kapenguria County hospital to be a big hospital. We shall have many referrals from Sigor, Kacheliba, Chepareria sub County hospitals. We want them to have fewer referrals. Our County is still behind, and patients are still being referred to Moi teaching and referral hospital, Eldoret,” he said.
He asked health workers to shun wrangles and unhealthy competition and instead serve locals better.
“If you are a sweeper, try to be the best. We need a difference in the health sector. We don’t want to hear any complaints but compliments,” he said.
He said the health sector was very critical and sensitive and should be empowered.
“We shall address all the challenges. We shall put a suggestion box to get feedback. We shall take utility vehicles and theatres in sub County hospitals,” he said.
West Pokot County health and sanitation executive member Clair Parklea said that the appointed members would receive training.
Parklea further called on all residents and medical officers to ensure prudent use of drugs.
