The Ruto administration: Profile of Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee, Musalia Mudavadi
Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi (born 21 September 1960) is a Kenyan politician and land economist who is expected to serve as President William Samoei Ruto’s Prime Cabinet Secretary should he pass the vetting process.
Mudavadi is married to Tessie Mudavadi, with whom he has three children: Moses, Michael, and Maryanne. Mudavadi is a die-hard Manchester United and AFC Leopards supporter.
Musalia Mudavadi: Soaring Above The Storms of Passion, his autobiography, was published in 2019.
In Kenyan politics, he is known as Madvd or most recently, Earthquake.
Mudavadi is also the party leader of the Amani National Congress (ANC), one of the Kenya Kwanza Alliance’s founding political parties.
He was Kenya’s 7th Vice-President in 2002 and Deputy Prime Minister (2008-2012 May), when he resigned to run for President in the 2013 Kenyan general election, finishing third. From 2005 until 2012, he was the deputy party leader of the ODM, and from May 2012 to July 2015, he was the Party Leader of the United Democratic Forum Party (UDF).
Mudavadi schooled at Nairobi Primary School, then Jamhuri and Nairobi School for his A- levels and the University of Nairobi.
He pursued a Bachelor of Arts (Land Economics) degree.
Mudavadi has served as Minister for Supplies and Marketing (1989 – 1993), Finance (1993 – 1997), Agriculture (1997 – 1999), Transport, Communications and Information (2000 – 2002).
In addition, he has served as Vice-President (2002) and also Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Government of the Republic of Kenya (2008 – 2013).
Mudavadi has also served as Member of Parliament for Sabatia from 2008 to 2013.
10 years of struggle to the top
Musalia Mudavadi’s journey to one of the country’s top positions has not been straightforward. He has been attempting to ascend to power since 2013. Even so, his position in Ruto’s cabinet is already being contested as MPs from the opposing party, Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Alliance, question its validity.
Musalia Mudavadi sought nomination as ODM’s presidential candidate for the 2013 General Election. He then left the ODM after a party constitution clause that provided the party leader a direct nomination as the presidential candidate effectively kept him out of the nomination campaign. Musalia, on the other hand, refused to quit as Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya, claiming that the position was public rather than party-related. He then took over the United Democratic Front Party (UDF) and became its presidential candidate.
Thinking of playing his cards right, he joined Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto to form the Jubilee Coalition, which brought together the UDF, URP, and TNA parties. Mudavadi, on the other hand, departed the coalition due to a breach of contract, which specified that Uhuru Kenyatta would step down in his place as presidential flag-bearer.
He then established the Amani National Congress (ANC), which would propel him into the presidential run in 2017. Mudavadi, acutely aware of the electoral landscape in Kenya, founded the National Super Alliance (NASA) coalition and invited the Cord trio of ODM’s Raila Odinga, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, and Moses Wetang’ula to join. They were defeated.
Kenya Kwanza and the rise back to the top
After their respective parties won three consecutive by-elections, Mudavadi tactically united with the other two NASA Principals, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula, and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi, to establish the One Kenya Alliance (OKA) in March 2021.
With the promise of being unpredictable, he caused a metaphorical political “earthquake” in January 2022, altering the country’s political course.
On January 23, 2022, Mudavadi accepted the ANC party’s presidential nomination and promised to work with the ceremony’s primary guest, William Ruto.
Mudavadi went on to endorse Deputy President William Ruto’s presidential candidacy, and they won the August 9, 2022 General Election against Raila Odinga, who had the support of incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta.
