The Ruto administration: Profile of Defence CS nominee, Aden Duale
Hon. Aden Bare Duale is a Kenyan politician who has been serving as the Member of the National Assembly for Garissa Township Constituency.
Duale was born on June 15, 1969. He is well-known for being one of the most outspoken legislators both within and outside parliament buildings.
He was the Jubilee Party’s Majority Leader of the National Assembly in the 11th Parliament from 2013 to 2017 and the 12th Parliament from 2017 to 2020, when he was expelled for perceived disloyalty to Jubilee Party leader former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Duale was originally elected under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) in 2007, but left the party in 2009 to form the United Republican Party alongside William Ruto.
In 1981, he graduated from Garrisa Primary School with a Certificate of Primary Education. Later, he enrolled at Garrisa High School and Moi Forces Academy, where he completed his KCSE in 1985 and his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education (KACSE) in 1987. He studied education at Moi University before going to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for his master’s degree in business administration (MBA).
Since the 2007 legislative elections, Aden has represented the Garissa township constituency, formerly Dujis Constituency, in Kenya’s National Assembly. He was first elected as a member of the Orange Democratic Movement, but switched parties for the 2013 elections and was re-elected as a member of the United Republican Party.
Duale was elected to his fourth consecutive term in parliament after receiving 9,905 votes on a UDA ticket against his nearest challenger Abdi Nasir Dolal of ODM, who received 5,972.
Duale also served as Assistant Minister in Kibaki’s Ministry of Livestock Development. He has also served on different house committees in both the 11th and 12th parliament.

He is married to retired General Mahmoud Mohammed’s daughter. Duale revealed that they have five sons together.
Nomination to the cabinet
Duale is currently nominated as the Cabinet Secretary for Defence by President William Ruto.
Duale will be responsible for National Defence Policy and Management, Protection of the Republic’s Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity, Support to Civil Authorities in Situations of Emergency and Disaster, Defence Intelligence, Co-ordination and Regulation of Space Related Activities in the Country, and Implementation of the Kenya Space Policy and any Related Programmes if he passes vetting.
