The Ruto administration: Profile of Attorney General nominee, Justin Muturi
Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi, commonly known as JB Muturi, was born on April 28, 1956.
Speaker Muturi attended Kangaru Boys High School before enrolling in the University of Nairobi’s School of Law in 1978 and graduating with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1981.
Later, he attended Kenya School of Law to pursue a Post Graduate Diploma in Law. When he was admitted to the bar in 1982, Muturi became an advocate of the Kenyan High Court.
Muturi is the seventh Speaker of Kenya’s National Assembly, serving from 2013 until 2022. He is the first Speaker to take office since the re-establishment of a bicameral legislature, as required by the 2010 Constitution. Muturi was elected speaker on March 28, 2013, after a second round of voting by National Assembly members, defeating outgoing speaker Kenneth Marende by a 219-129 margin.
Muturi was first elected to the Kenya African National Union’s Siakago Constituency in Parliament following a byelection in 1999. During the 10th Parliament, he was re-elected as opposition chief whip and chair of the Public Investment Committee. In 2007, he ran for re-election but was defeated by Lenny Kivuti.
Muturi ran for the Mbeere North parliamentary seat as a member of The National Alliance party in 2013, but was defeated by Muriuki Njagagua.
From 1999 to 2004, he was a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Review. In November 2008, he was elected KANU National Organising Secretary, and from 2008 to 2010, he chaired the PNU constitution committee. In April 2011, he was appointed chairman of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD), a civil society organization that works on issues of democracy in multi-party politics.
Muturi was formerly a judiciary employee serving as a principal magistrate between 1982 and 1997 before retiring from judicial service. He also served as the chairman of the Judges and Magistrates Association during the time. He was a member of the Africa Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption, Global Organisation of Parliamentarians Against Corruption and the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank.
Outside of the office, Honourable Muturi is an avid reader, devout Anglican, and firm believer in God. He enjoys watching sports and is particularly fond of athletics, football, and volleyball. He also enjoys traveling and being outdoors.
Muturi’s coming together with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance
Justin Muturi officially joined the Kenya Kwanza Alliance team in April 2022, putting an end to months of speculation about him backing William Ruto.
His political career was in jeopardy as he fought to remain relevant, torn between supporting Uhuru Kenyatta, with whom he had worked in his administration for over 9 years, and playing the Mt. Kenya card and backing Ruto.
Muturi was the Democratic Party’s (DP) party leader until recently, when he resigned to accept President Ruto’s nomination for Attorney General.
Justin Muturi is married to one wife and has three children.
