The guilty are afraid, Karua says after Chebukati, 2 ex-IEBC Commissioners snubbed talks
Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has thrown jab at former IEBC Commissioners over thier failure to appear to make submissions at the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO).
The former IEBC commissioners were to appear before the NADCO on Thursday afternoon but former chairperson Wafula Chebukati, and ex-commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu did not show up.
In her response, Karua said the three did not show up because they were afraid.
“The guilty are afraid,” she tweeted.
In a joint statement, Chebukati, Guliye and Molu said participating in the dialogue talks would be a reward for impunity.
“We won’t be appearing before the National Dialogue Committee to discuss issues that have been resolved. With tremendous respect to the Committee, our participation in the talks would be an unmitigated betrayal to the IEBC Staff who were tortured and murdered,” they said.
They cited the torture and murder of IEBC staff as a key concern, asserting that their participation in the talks would constitute a betrayal to these victims.
Instead of participating in the dialogue, the three called for the formation of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the events of August 15, 2022, at Bomas of Kenya.
They argued that these events had tarnished Kenya’s image and that appropriate punishment should be administered to those found responsible. They added that such an inquiry would enhance the independence of IEBC, aligning it with the constitution’s intended stature.
Meanwhile, former Commissioners led by former vice-chair Juliana Cherera, Francis Wanderi, Justus Nyang’aya, and Irene Masit did appear before the committee to present their submissions.
Cherera and Masit participated virtually, citing threats and the need to flee the country following their actions.
The “Cherera Four” explained that they resigned from their positions after raising questions about the process that led to the declaration of presidential results. They rejected the presidential results announced by Chebukati on August 15, 2022, alleging discrepancies and irregularities in the final tallying process.
Cherera said, “As the Vice-Chair, even today, we stand by our word that we disown the presidential election results… I want to submit that these elections be audited, the servers should be opened, and a forensic audit be conducted. After the audit, let’s move on!”
However, this form was not made available to them, and instead, they received a form with a summary of results from all counties.
The 2022 elections have been a source of contention between the Azimio and Kenya Kwanza brigades, with opposition leader Raila Odinga calling for the servers to be opened, while President William Ruto argues that the elections are in the past, and the country needs to move on.
The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) is a 10-member committee that was formed to ensure matters between the two parties are settled after the Raila-led “Maandamanos.”
