The costly tree planting mission
President William Ruto, in his ‘one government service delivery’ approach, sent his entire cabinet across the country for the tree-planting exercise during Monday’s National Tree Planting Day.
Some of the cabinet secretaries had to cover more than two counties, travelling hundreds of kilometres.
For a government that has repeatedly talked about austerity measures and President Ruto dropping the ‘Kenyans tighten your belts’ hook during his State of the Nation address, the Cabinet seems to have more than enough to spend.
Critics have suggested that the government may have spent more money on this tree-planting mission than is reasonable.
The estimated cost of hiring a helicopter in Kenya is between Ksh 150,000 and Ksh 200,000 per hour.
Here’s a breakdown of the CSs trips across the country during the tree-planting exercise:
CS Kithure Kindiki’s itinerary:
- CS Kithure Kindiki travelled approximately 1,823 kilometres, including Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Marsabit.
- CS Kindiki’s tour took approximately 8 hours, which would result in an estimated cost of about Ksh 1.6 million.
CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s itinerary:
- CS Murkomen travelled approximately 854 kilometres, including Homa Bay and Mombasa.
- The estimated cost of hiring a helicopter for this distance is approximately 1.2 million KSH for 6 hours.

- CS Peninah Malonza covered 549 km.
- CS Simon Chelugui covered 387 km.
- CS Rebecca Miano covered 267 km.
