Tension in Kilifi as Governor, MCAs differ over KES 2M car grants
Tension is brewing in Kilifi County between Governor Gideon Mung’aro and Members of the County Assembly over County Government funds.
Mung’aro is said to have differed with MCAs over the supplementary budget where MCAs demanded that their KES 2 million car grant be included.
According to sources, the MCAs are said to have implored the County chief to consider their interests after giving him KES 600 million in the first supplementary budget passed in the assembly in October last year.
Mung’aro is now seeking approval for a KES 400 million supplementary budget but MCAs have stood their ground not to pass it until they get the car grants.
The MCAs have now turned into punching bags as the governor spares no chance to attack them in his public engagements.
In a recent spat, Mung’aro publicly attacked MCAs at a relief food distribution in Dabaso and Kakuyuni wards.
He vowed not to bow to their pressure insisting that he was elected by the people and not MCAs.
Speaking at the Kilifi County Assembly on Wednesday afternoon after being addressed by Senator Stewards Madzayo, the MCAs called for a truce between them and the governor saying that the latter was disrespecting them.
Led by Bamba ward MCA Mohamed Mwambire, the county legislatures accused the Governor of not listening to them.
“The governor has gone to the public to air our differences and he should check his mouth because he is misinterpreting our views and the breakdown of communication has made him go mad,” he said, adding that Mung’aro would have simply called a meeting to resolve the issues.
He added that MCAs had now resolved to involve Senator Madzayo to find a common ground with the County chief.
Madzayo said that the Senate will come in and resolve the issues raised by both the MCAs and the Governor.
“I will talk to the MCAs and get to know what is the problem because I cannot fight for devolved funds then those who are supposed to implement projects are quarreling,” he said.
