Support me, I’ll support you, Ruto tells Japan

Nairobi has pledged to support Tokyo on the global stage as President William Ruto’s tour of the Asian country draws to a close.

The hope is that Japan will reciprocate the gesture.

This follows the two countries’ decision to work together, cemented by the President’s two-day visit to Tokyo.

Dr Ruto specifically appealed to Japan to support his bid to host the International Plastics Convention in Nairobi.

President Ruto also asked Japan to support Kenya’s multinational stabilization mission in Haiti, among other requests. The High Court has halted the deployment of police in the troubled Caribbean nation.

The Head of State said he was counting on Japan’s support for Kenya’s development in line with the call for radical positive change.

“Kenya will remain a strong supporter of the Japan-AU partnership in general and TICAD in particular, including participation in meetings and summits and other activities under its auspices,” President Ruto said. “Similarly, we look forward to Japan’s increased support for the development of our country in line with the demands of radical positive transformation,” he said.

Japan and Kenya welcomed the importance of rules-based, transparent and fair development financing and the need for all creditor countries to adhere to international financial rules and standards.

Japan, Dr Ruto noted, has a strong voice that can support and effectively amplify the disenfranchised voices of developing countries.

He explained that Kenya can count on Japan’s support in advocating for the special development needs of developing countries in terms of access to affordable financing for sustainable development and reform of the international development finance architecture.

Japan and President Ruto of Kenya recognized the importance of rules-based, transparent and fair development finance and the importance of compliance with international financial rules and standards by all creditor countries.

Together with Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Dr Ruto said, they discussed what he described as an “urgent and important campaign” to reform the United Nations Security Council “to reflect its founding values and principles, and to become fairer, more equitable and more democratic in its decision-making and interventions”.

He continued: “In our discussions, we noted the need for the international community to uphold the foundations of the international order, such as respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, in order to ensure global peace and stability”.

In addition, he said, the discussion on reforms to realize rules-based multilateralism was extensively covered in their talks with the Prime Minister of Japan. He reiterated that Kenya shares with Japan a commitment to co-creating global solutions to global challenges.

“Prime Minister Kishida and I agreed on the need for Kenya and Japan to institutionalise the bilateral exchange of high-level visits to provide continuous high-level political guidance to enhance cooperation between technical teams in areas of mutual interest at both bilateral and multilateral levels,” Dr Ruto said.
