Steady progress in Nairobi process for peace and stability in Eastern DRC
The Nairobi Process on the Restoration of Peace and Stability in eastern DRC, which was initiated by retired president Uhuru Kenyatta and supported by President of the DRC Félix Tshisekedi, has continued to make steady and important progress.
According to a press statement released by the Office of the Facilitator of the East African Community-led Nairobi Process, significant progress has been made since the three conclaves of eastern African Heads of State and the three Nairobi conferences convened in 2022.
While South Kivu has enjoyed relatively increased peace and a reduction of hostilities, North Kivu has also seen a decline in violence but remains volatile. However, steady progress is being made, including the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected populations and further deployments to secure key areas and towns.
A Planning Workshop was held in Naivasha, Kenya in March 2023 to take stock of the political developments in Eastern DRC since the conclusion of the Nairobi III intra-Congolese consultations and to facilitate the planning for the 4th Intra – Congolese consultations.
“Meanwhile, M23 has withdrawn from the Western front, and the main supply route of Bunagana- Rutshuru-Kibumba-Goma has been secured,” read the statement in part.
These developments signal the continued commitment of East African Heads of State to the process, as well as the continued engagement of the Facilitator, former President Kenyatta. Uhuru has pledged to continue reaching out to all parties, both political as well as armed groups, in his efforts to help bring peace to the east of the DRC.
