State launches investigation into sexual abuse claims in two British-owned tea farms
Ministry of Labour and Social Protection has launched an investigation into claims of sexual exploitation of women for jobs in two tea farms owned by British companies, Unilever and James Finlay. The investigation comes after a documentary aired by the BBC, which found that more than 70 women had been abused by their managers at the two plantations.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Principal Secretary of the State Department for Labour, Geoffrey Kaituko, said the government takes the allegations seriously and expressed concern that such acts could happen.
“The Ministry is committed to the promotion of decent work for all without discrimination,” Kaituko said.
“These accusations amount to a violation of the law and workers’ rights. It depicts a hostile work environment which is not conducive to employment. Sexual harassment is an offence under the Employment Act and also a criminal offence under the Penal Code and Sexual Offences Act.”
Kaituko disclosed that the Ministry is engaging all parties involved, including the workers, trade unions, and employers, to get to the bottom of the matter. He also stated that the outcome of the probe will be made available to the public once the investigation is complete.
“We are working together with the police and other relevant government agencies to address the matter,” he added.
The revelations of sexual exploitation in the two firms have caused outrage among the public, with many calling for the companies to be held accountable for their actions.
The documentary also highlighted non-compliance with occupational health and safety regulations, lack of grievance handling mechanisms, transmission of sexually related diseases by senior managers, and poor terms and conditions of work in the two companies.
Kaituko stated, “The Ministry is committed to the promotion of decent work for all, without discrimination.”
