Stalemate: Azimio Senators threaten to impeach Speaker Kingi over Dullo’s removal
Azimio Senators have threatened to impeach Speaker Amason Kingi after he failed to effect the removal of Fatuma Dullo as the Minority Whip.
The move comes after the senators accused Kingi of playing partisan politics and “raping” the Constitution and the Standing Orders.
On Wednesday, Azimio had effected changes to the minority leader of the House and kicked out Dullo as the Minority Whip, and elevated Ledama Olekina to the position.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna was picked to replace the Narok senator as the Deputy Minority Whip. However, the change of leadership was not effected by Speaker Kingi through communication on the floor of the House.
Kingi informed the House that he received communication on the change of guard too late in the day. He was expected to effect the changes on Thursday but he yet again failed to do so sparking outrage from the Azimio side.
“I find it a bit strange as the leader of the minority. Despite the fact that I wrote to you, you have not effected the changes,” said Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo.
Senator Olekina also protested the speaker’s silence, saying “The Speaker is playing with our emotions and is dragging us to a constitutional crisis.”
The legislators believe that Kingi is biased and has failed in his duties as the speaker of the house. They have threatened to move a motion to impeach him next week.
“Next week we are going to move a motion to remove Speaker Kingi,” said Mombasa Senator Mohammed Faki.
Garissa Senator Abdul Haji has faulted the minority’s move to remove Dullo, saying that the decision was too rushed. Haji said that Dullo’s removal on account of meeting President William Ruto amounts to double standards as the same action has not been taken against governors who met the head of state.
The fate of Speaker Kingi now hangs in the balance as it remains to be seen whether or not the Azimio Senators, will make good their threat and table the motion of impeachment.
