Sonko claims some politicians blocking his efforts to help Baby Sagini
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has claimed that “bad politics” and “dirty-minded politicians” have hindered his efforts to assist Baby Sagini and his 7-year-old sister Shantel.
In a tweet, Sonko accused unnamed politicians of using the situation for their own political gain. However, he stressed that he would continue to pursue the matter and help the children in any way he could.
Sonko also revealed that Baby Sagini missed two crucial appointments at the Westlands laser eye hospital last week, which were intended to obtain a review report that could be sent to China for the purpose of arranging artificial eye implants for the child.
The former Governor thanked Esnahs Nyaramba, a good Samaritan, for “assisting on the ground.” In a video, Sonko showed Christmas gifts that he plans to send to Baby Sagini and Shantel through Nyaramba.
Last week, Sonko announced that he had taken steps to get Baby Sagini the medical care he needs. He conducted research to find the best hospital for the child’s case and identified the Dennis Lam Eye Hospital in Shenzhen, South China as a potential option.
He also contacted the hospital and learned that Baby Sagini must have a referral from at least two Kenyan hospitals before he can be treated there. In response, Sonko scheduled an appointment for Baby Sagini to be reviewed at the Westlands laser eye hospital in Nairobi and engaged the area MP and the county government of Kisii to facilitate the child’s travel to the hospital.
Additionally, he contacted the Nairobi County Government to recommend eye specialists from Mbagathi Hospital to do a separate review of Baby Sagini, with the intention of forwarding the two reports to China.
Three-year-old Baby Sagini’s eyes were gouged out under unclear circumstances and he has since been taken into protective custody by the government.
Three suspects, Alex Ochogo (Cousin to Sagini), Pacifica Nyakerario (Aunt) and Rael Nyakerario (Grandmother) were on Friday arraigned and charged with attempted murder in relation to the incident.
