Slain athlete Agnes Tirop’s accused husband freed on bail
The sole suspect in the murder of slain athlete Agnes Tirop has been released on Sh500,000 cash bail by an Eldoret court, after being in police custody for two years.
The release was granted by an Eldoret court based on a favourable status report on Rotich’s conduct, both pre and during the murder case, provided by the probation officer.
Justice Robert Wananda, who presided over the case, explained that there were no compelling reasons to continue holding Rotich in prison remand.
The judge emphasized that Rotich’s behaviour during the two years in remand indicated that he would conduct himself appropriately upon release. However, the murder charges related to the death of Agnes Tirop still stand.
As part of the bail conditions, Rotich has been prohibited from visiting his house in Iten, which is being treated as a crime scene. He must surrender his passport to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and physically present himself at DCI offices every Monday.
Rotich is also ordered to stay away from the family of the deceased and is forbidden from contacting prosecution witnesses. Additionally, the court directed that Rotich should not leave Uasin Gishu County until the case is determined.
The family of the late Agnes Tirop has refuted claims that she was married to the suspect.
When Rotich first appeared in court to take plea, he denied the murder charges.
Agnes Tirop, a former world cross country champion, was murdered on October 13, 2021, at her Iten home in Elgeyo Marakwet County, sustaining stab wounds to her chest, neck, and stomach.
Tirop was a highly accomplished athlete, earning a bronze medal for Kenya in the 10,000m at the 2017 and 2019 World Championships.
Her last national assignment was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in August 2021, where she finished fourth in the 5,000m race. In September 2021, just a month before her tragic death, Tirop broke the women’s 10km world record during a road race in Germany.
The prosecution has listed 43 witnesses against Rotich as the case proceeds.
