Shock as Meru man brutally kills his mother and grandmother

Residents of Ngeene village in Mwanganthia location were thrown into mourning last Sunday when Jamleck Muriithi made good his threat that he would “kill somebody one day” which the family said he had repeated several times over the past five years.

His father, Reuben Kabujo, recounted how he fought off his violent son before he killed his wife Zipporah Mutura, 50, and his mother Tiritha Karimi in the span of one hour.

He said his son, who had lately become violent, timed when most people had gone to church and accosted him at around 9am. He started hurling insults, saying the family had accused him of smoking bhang.

“I was seated outside under a tree while taking tea. Muriithi walked to me and started shouting. I told him, ‘my son, what is wrong with you today? Calm down.

“Nobody has ever accused you of what you are saying. All of a sudden he threw a jab at me and I blocked it. I hit him and he ran away, shouting obscenities and saying he would come back to finish me,” the distraught father recounted.

“I thought he had gone to the farm. But suddenly I heard three loud successive bangs. What I did not know is that he had gone to his grandmother’s house and picked an axe and as he was coming back to fight me, he met her on the way,” he added.

Kabujo said he ran towards the noise. What he saw was horrific. His mother was sprawled on the ground, her head split into two. Fearing for his life, he forgot that his wife was also in the same compound and took off.

“I ran as fast as I could and reported the matter to the area chief. As we were talking, we heard people shouting that my son had also killed his mother,” he said.

After killing his grandmother, Muriithi heard his mother wailing in the house and followed her there. He also hit her several times on the head, leaving her for dead.

Relatives said that after the incident, Muriithi dashed into his house, quickly changed clothes that were drenched in blood and took off. He was apprehended by a mob that was baying for his blood and was saved by officers from Gaitu police station who arrested him.

Juster Kathuraniri, Murithi’s sister said her brother had a habit of threatening even her children when she visited her father.

“On several occasions, he had told my children that he would punish them for an unspecified mistake he claimed they had committed against him. But I did not take it seriously until last Sunday,” the 32-year-old said, sobbing.

Godfrey Bundi, the area chief, said the family had been living in fear that Murithi would one day live up to his threat, saying he had shown signs of depression.

“This is the first incident in this village and we are in shock. I advise members of families with people who keep threatening them to take the threats seriously and resolve the problems before they escalate into deadly fights,” he said.
