Sh9m worth of ‘meth’ drug seized at JKIA stashed in bike saddles

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives on Tuesday evening seized drugs worth Sh9 million at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Detectives said the methamphetamine drugs, popularly known as ‘meth’, weighed more than one kilogram and were concealed inside bicycle saddles in a consignment bound for Jakarta, Indonesia from Moroni, Comoros.

“The drug estimated at over Sh9 million was stashed among other items declared as bicycle accessories in a consignment being shipped from Moroni, Comoros,” the DCI said.

The consignment was flagged by detectives deployed at the airport to handle immigration crime and suspicious cargo.

According to DCI, the verification exercise saw brown packages with a white crystalline substance found concealed in eleven saddles.

“Upon testing, the substance, it tested positive for methamphetamine. Interpol operations have since been launched to identify the faces behind the illicit trade for arrest and prosecution,” detectives added.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It is typically thought of as a street drug, however, it can be prescribed as Desoxyn, which is used for weight loss in obese patients or for ADHD. In as much as Desoxyn is a prescription drug, there is still a high risk of abuse and dependence.

The latest ‘meth’ bust comes at a time when crackdowns on drug traffickers and unlicensed brewers have been heightened, a move by the government to foil the illicit trade in the country.

Last month, detectives arrested a 37-year-old Polish man who was allegedly found in possession of heroin worth Sh3.2 million.

The anti-narcotics detectives based at JKIA arrested the suspect when he was about to board a Hungary-bound Egyptian airline.

The alleged trafficker, who was destined for Hungary’s capital (Budapest), was booked in police cells awaiting further processing and arraignment.

The Director of the Anti-Narcotics Directorate, Margaret Karanja, issued a stern warning to drug traffickers and peddlers, saying they would be treated with the severity of the law, despite their roles in the trade.

“Kenya remains a hostile ground for perpetrators, irrespective of their status in the country. All those caught up in the ring of traffickers and peddlers will be treated with the severity of the law, despite their roles in the trade,” she said.

Most of the heroin in the country originates from Afghanistan through the Indian Ocean while cocaine originates from South America.

Some Kenyans have been arrested with narcotics in India raising concerns there could be more of the drugs locally.
