Kenya and Uganda have signed agreements that will see to it the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is extended to Kampala in Uganda, Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said.
The CS said the SGR, which currently connects Mombasa to to Nairo and onwards to Naivasha, will be extended to Malaba first through the joint agreement after which the government of Uganda will stretch it to Kampala.
Uganda Minister of Works and Transport Edward Katumba Wamala and his Kenya Roads and Transport counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen signed bilateral agreement re-affirming their commitment to the development of the project.
According to the two governments, the development of SGR would result in efficiency and reduction of transportation costs for the benefit if the people in the region
When it started operations in early 2018, it was hoped that the Standard Gauge Railway’s cargo service would offer a much-needed alternative to road transport.
Industries had for years demanded a functioning railway line in the country, which is the preferred mode of transport for cargo globally due to its predictability, the safety of goods being ferried and reduced wear and tear on the roads.
Ever since, the SGR freight service has seen an upward trajectory in volume of goods transported.
