Several people suspected to be mentally ill were on Monday rescued inside a controversial church in Kisumu.
The rescue operation which was led by the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on the Proliferation of Religious Organizations found the people allegedly chained and locked up inside the Coptic Holy Ghost Church said to be owned by one pastor John Pesa.
According to the committee, the people had been kept in deplorable conditions.
“There is no permission for anyone to hold sick people in any church. Sick people should be in hospitals,” chair of the committee Shakila Abdalla said.
She said the held people were kept in poor conditions where they were fed once a day and only allowed to use buckets as toilets.
The Ad Hoc Senate Committee, headed by Tana River senator Danson Mungatana and chaired by Shakila Abdalla, was set up to investigate the proliferation of religious organizations after the deaths of the faithful of Good News International International, which is linked to controversial Pastor Paul Makenzie.
According to the latest update, the death toll of the Shakahola cult has hit over 330.
The Shakahola massacre occurred when the controversial Good News International Pastor, Paul Mackenzie, brainwashed his followers and initiated them into a cult that forced them to fast with the promise that when they died they would go to see Jesus Christ.
