School calendar to revert to normal starting January

The Ministry of Education has announced the return of pre-covid school calendar starting January 23, 2023.

According to an internal memo dated November 7, seen by NTV digital, the ministry will return opening traditional opening and closing dates for pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools.

The first term will run from January 23 to April 21, with a three-day break in March. The term will be 13 weeks long.

The second term will start on May 8 and end on August 11, with a three-day break in late June. Likewise, the term will last 13 weeks.

There will be a two-week holiday at the end of each term.  The third term is to start on August 28 and end on November 3 lasting 10 weeks.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) will run from November 6 to November 9, lasting four days. The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education will commence on November 10, and end on December 1.

Equally, the memo outlines the schedule for Teachers Training College, 2022 to 2023. According to the memo, term one is underway, starting on August 23 and will end on December 2, lasting for 14 weeks.

Term two will begin on January 23 and will last for 13 weeks, ending on April 21. Trainee teachers will be given a two-week holiday before beginning their third term on May 8. The 13-week term concludes on August 11.

After a three-week break, students will return to class on September 4 for their first term, which will last through November 18. The term will span 12 weeks, with a six-week break in between.

The memo by the Permanent Secretary for State Department for Basic Education is addressed to both Regional Directors of Education and County Directors of Education.

The restoration of the pre-pandemic school calendar will put an end to the crammed school timetable that saw kids enjoy only a week of vacation to make up for the lost time.

Over 15 million pupils in primary and secondary schools across the country were affected by the Covid19 pandemic. Schools closed on March 16, 2020, reopened partially on October 19, 2020, and reopened completely on January 4, 2021.

The nine months hiatus brought with it a lot of disparities in learning with many experts warning it will take time to reverse the tide.
