Sakaja waives permit fees for photographers and filmmakers in Nairobi
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced the scrapping off of all business licences as well as a waiver of fees charged to photographers and filmmakers in Nairobi, allowing the public to shoot for free in the city.
Sakaja stated that he was keeping his promise to the creative economy to make a living without being harassed by authorities.
“Some of these rules are colonial, what can a photo really do when shared?” Sakaja posed.
“We have waived all business permits for freeelance photographers and filmmakers in Nairobi. All the fees they are charged per day while shooting in Nairobi are also done away with.
Previous process to shoot in the city
To take photos or videos in Nairobi, one would have to go through a laborious process in order to prevent a run-in with the City Council.
To begin, a registered filming agent would be required to get a Filming License from KFCB, which might cost up to Ksh 6,000. Then, write a letter to the OCS of the Police Station with jurisdiction over your filming or photography location.
After the OCS signed and stamped the letter, one would take a copy to the Department of Urban Planning at City Hall for billing and payment. This process could go for close to Ksh 4,000 for a whole day of shooting.
In support of the creative industry, Sakaja recently announced a Nairobi Festival, which will be held every December after Jamhuri Day to display and celebrate the city’s “vibe.”
“In December, we will set aside some streets to display culture, food, creativity, have the nganya awards for the best-done matatus, have rugby, football and basketball tournaments and many other activities,” he said.
