Sakaja opens Sh276m Dandora stadium to the public

Nairobi City County government has finally opened the Sh 276 million Dandora stadium to the public after delays and controversy that delayed the completion of construction works in the stadium for the past six years.

The 4,000 sitting capacity whose construction started in 2018 was officially opened by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Friday afternoon.

The stadium features a perimeter wall and a play pitch equipped with an artificial turf with football field fixtures and utility rooms constructed to international standards. There are also floodlights and a storm water drainage as well as graffiti on a section of the stadium.

Mr Sakaja said the new stadium will go a long way in improving the sport talent within the county and provide a new opportunity for the youth to grow their talent.

“The opening of Dandora Stadium is a welcome opportunity for young people to develop their talent at the state-of-the-art facility. This will foster opportunities in sports and aid to protect our youth future,” Mr Sakaja said.

He has also said the county government is seeking collaboration with the national government to construct more stadia in Nairobi.

“We thank Dandora youth for your steadfastness. No one has broken into the stadium even after the construction works stopped. We are keen to conclude other stadia such as City Stadium to help the youth. We have a meeting between the national government and Nairobi to ensure that we get resources to have stadia in the boroughs and sub-counties,” he added.

The county governor also proposee thw renaming of the stadium to former Embakasi MP Mugabe Were.

The stadium is expected to host a number of games for the Dandora Youth Football Club (FC) as well as the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League games starting next week.

The construction of the stadium was commissioned by former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko in 2018. In 2019, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) halted the construction works in the stadium following claims over the use of substandard materials in the construction works in the stadium.

The Senates’ Labour and Social Welfare Committee headed by the current governor Johnson Sakaja also opened a probe following claims that the contractor opted to use steel instead of concrete in different sections within the stadium.

A number of Nairobi County government officials were also grilled over the construction of the project. They were accused of colluding with the contractor to deliver poor quality works and irregular payments running into millions of shillings.

Mr Sonko however maintained that the happenings were just political-witch hunt after falling out with the former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Construction works resumed in the stadium in January 2023 following the intervention of the county governor.

The county government is also working on other stadia such as the Joseph Kang’ethe stadium, Uhuru sports complex and Mwiki stadium in Kasarani.
