Sakaja announces crackdown on illegal dumping sites
Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja has announced a fresh crackdown on illegal dumping sites to be led by police officers drawn from the National Police Service and the county enforcement team.
The new exercise will be targeting the private service providers who collect garbage and dump it on illegal sites within Nairobi county including roadsides and market places as well as estates.
Mr Sakaja who was speaking during a meeting with the security chiefs led by the Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei in Nairobi said the new collaborative effort with police officers will help maintain order and dignity in the city.
“These are the private service providers who are paid by the people living in the estates to collect garbage. Once they are paid and they realise there is too much traffic when they are taking the garbage to Dandora, they just dump it on the roadside at night with their trucks. They do not gain anything by getting all the way to Dandora. They will go dump it at night in a field or on the road so that they can do more trips. If we assist each other we will reduce the city from being dirty.” Mr Sakaja said.
He has also affirmed the commitment of the county government to resolve the garbage menace within the city.
“We want a city of order, dignity, hope and opportunity. This is what the national police service wants, the national government administration and opportunity. We have already done a number of things to help the county government achieve this goal,” he added.
The new announcement comes after city residents decried the rise of illegal dumping sites in Nairobi.
Most of the dumpsites are located within city estates full of foul smell and posing a health risk to the residents. Some of the dumping sites are also located on the roads creating chaos and causing disorder.
As part of enhancing garbage collection within the city, the Sakaja-led administration recently said they had increased the number of garbage contractors to 24 spread across the 17 sub-counties.
The county government has also announced plans to decentralize the services to new administrative units called boroughs.
