Ruto’s UDA gets most nomination slots, to dominate both Houses of Parliament
As the dust settles on the presidential election, the focus is swiftly shifting to Parliament with the election of Speakers in both Houses coming up on Thursday. The National Assembly has 349 MPs (290 from single-member constituencies, 47 women representing counties, and 12 nominated by political parties depending on their strength) while the Senate has 67 Senators (47 elected from each county and 20 nominated by political parties depending on seats won).
The numbers on each political side are critical as both fronting key figures to take up the Speakers’ roles. In the National Assembly, UDA gets 6 nomination slots while ODM gets 4 with Jubilee and Wiper getting a single slot each.
President-Elect William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leads on the numbers with 144 of the 349 seats in the National Assembly which translates to 42.2 per cent of the entire House. Raila Odinga’s ODM comes second with 90 MPs (25.7 per cent) followed by Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Party with 28 (8 per cent) and Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper with 26 (7.4 per cent).
However, despite the single-party member numbers, Ruto will rely a lot on members of his Kenya Kwanza Coalition to get things done in Parliament with Raila’s Azimio la Umoja legally set to take up the Majority Leader and Whip positions, albeit for two months only. Some of the Azimio constituent parties including UDM, PAA, MCC, MDDG, and MDG have already signed new agreements with Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza but would have to wait until November 9 to legally exit Azimio.
In the Senate, UDA gets a total of 10 nomination slots bringing the total number of UDA Senators to 32 (47.7 per cent) with ODM getting 6 slots to bring the Orange Party Senators to 19 (28.3 per cent).
