Ruto’s Sh1 million token causes rift in DeKUT
A war of words has erupted between Dedan Kimathi University of Technology’s (DeKUT) administration and its student’s body, (DeKUTSO) over President William Ruto’s Sh1 million donation.
The bone of contention is the administration’s April 9, statement that claimed the students had agreed amongst themselves to share out the cash equally, an exercise that it calculated to be Sh180 per student.
The math was that the students to share out the cash were 5,556.
The student’s body now says the decision lacks its input hence null and void and proceeded to condemn it as “fake”.
“The fake decision was made without our input and we strongly disagree with it. We treat it as an act of undermining the students’ leadership,” reads the April 12 statement by the DeKUTSO Secretary General Mr Nicholas Ng’etich.
The president had visited the institution on March 26, 2024 and as a gesture of charity to the students, offered the cash “for your own use as students”.
It is during this visit that President Ruto ambitiously announced that his government during his State House tenancy was intending to make Kenyan youths drivers of European and Asian economies through outsourced technologies.
It is then that the institute’s Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW) announced that it had commenced a public participation drive to come up with a common ground on how the cash would be utilised.
Dr Esther Nthiga who is the DSW director released the findings of the opinion poll that she said had emanated from the students ruling that the cash was to be shared equally.
“The university through the Directorate of Students’ Welfare conducted a public participation amongst students through a Google form between April 2, 2024 and April 4, 2024. The results were as follows: Share the money equally (51 percent), organize a luncheon (36.4 percent) and allocate to students bursary at 35.5 percent,” Dr Nthiga’s statement reads in part.
The statement added that “following the outcome of the public participation it has been decided that every registered undergraduate student during the January 2024 semester including students who are on internal attachment during the semester will be given Ksh180”.
However, it was not lost out to keen observers that the results of the opinion poll were faulty since the total percentage of respondents was 122.9 percent instead of 100 percent.
Dr Nthiga proceeded to direct all class representatives to inform their fellow classmates to collect the money from the DSW office starting April 9, 2024 to April 19, 2024 from 10am as per the attached schedule.
She directed the beneficiaries to carry their student and national Identity Cards “and kindly note that any uncollected money by April 19, 2024 will be channeled to the students bursary kitty”.
However, the students’ body did not offer its preferred utilisation alternative, ordinarily the political donations being used to orgamise for in-house bashes.
