Ruto tells fraudsters behind fake fertiliser to compensate farmers
President Ruto has said farmers who were supplied with fake fertiliser must be fully compensated by those responsible.
Speaking in West Pokot County on Monday, President Ruto said the country has enough fertiliser and all farmers will get the right fertiliser.
“Every farmer will get the right fertiliser and the cartels that want to frustrate our production efforts will face the consequences. There is a company called KEL and if any farmer has been supplied with their fake fertiliser, they must be fully compensated. The cartels must be held accountable,” he said, referring to the company involved in the fake fertiliser scam.
“We had logistical challenges because of the war in Ukraine and had to divert supplies and that has been resolved,” the president said while commissioning the new Cemtech Limited clinker plant in Sebit, West Pokot, an investment of the Devki Group of Companies.
The government has already suspended the operations of Ms KEL Chemicals and ordered the immediate seizure of its fertiliser products sold in the Kenyan market following the completion of tests on all fertiliser distributed to farmers across the country under the subsidy programme.
According to tests conducted by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Kelphos Plus, Kelphos Gold and NPK 10:26:10 manufactured by KEL Chemicals did not meet the required standards.
Early Monday morning, the President paid an impromptu visit to the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCBP) depot in Eldoret, where he said the government would deal with cartels selling fake fertiliser.
“We will deal with fraudsters who are trying to undermine our food production by selling fake fertiliser. I visited the NCPB depot in Eldoret to witness the distribution of fertiliser to farmers and I am satisfied with the ongoing exercise,” he said.
However, he noted that the process needs to be accelerated due to increased rains across the country and directed the NCPB management to speed up the distribution of subsidised fertiliser to farmers. He assured farmers across the country that there were sufficient stocks to meet their needs.
The president said he would continue to push for lower fertiliser prices to make farming more profitable.
“We do not want to limit this to maize farming. We are widening our range of crops so that our income can increase,” he said.
The President noted that it is possible to make agriculture a lucrative business.
“It is possible for agriculture to drive our industrialisation and boost our exports,” he said during his tour of the NCPB warehouses in Eldoret.
