Ruto takes control of Senate as Kingi is elected Speaker
President-Elect William Ruto has taken over the Senate with his Coast region ally former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi having been elected as Speaker. Kingi beat six other candidates to clinch the seat in a House where Kenya Kwanza has a majority of Senators.
Azimio la Umoja Senators walked out of the Chamber after the Clerk communicated that Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka had withdrawn from the race. Kalonzo had been endorsed for the seat after a meeting in Kajiado attended by all Azimio MPs, council chairman Uhuru Kenyatta, and Party Leader Raila Odinga.
Kingi got 46 votes meaning that 10 Azimio Senators voted for him in the election. Those outside Kenya Kwanza that voted for Kingi were Senators Mwaruma (Taita), Githuku (Lamu), Faki (Mombasa), Madzayo (Kilifi), Juma Boy (Kwale), Haji (Garissa), Lomenen (Turkana), Okiya Omtatah (Busia), Fatuma Dhuloo (Isiolo) and Jubilee Nominee Margaret Kamar.
The 10 remained in the Chamber as others from Azimio walked out of the Chamber.
Kingi was sworn in as the first governor of Kilifi County in March 2013. Prior to his election as a governor, he was the Minister for Fisheries Development between 2010 to March 2013.
