Ruto: Six rejected judges to be sworn-in on Wednesday

President William Ruto has appointed the six  Court of Appeal judges rejected by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“I will appoint the six judges already nominated for appointment to the court of appeal done 3 years ago by the Judicial Service Commission. Tomorrow I precede over their swearing-in,” said Ruto.

In a Gazette Notice dated June 3, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed 34 of the 41 judges forwarded to him by the JSC in 2019.  Those left out were Joel Ngugi, George Odunga, Aggrey Muchelule, Weldon Korir, Evans Makori, and Elizabeth Omange.

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta sighted questionable character as well as integrity issues in rejecting the six nominee judges.

President Ruto has indicated that he will swear in the six judges tomorrow for them to start their duties.

In his speech following his inauguration, President Ruto outlined a bagful of goodies for the Judiciary hailing them for standing firm in deciding on electoral petitions.

“My administration will respect judicial decisions while we cement the place of Kenya as a country anchored in democracy and rule of law.”

In order to improve the autonomy of the judiciary, the President has said he will scale up the Judiciary Fund.

“My administration will scale up budgetary allocation to the judiciary by  Sh.3 billion annually for the next five years. This should help increase the number of small claims courts from the current 25 to 100,” said Ruto.

President Ruto also promised to work with the Judiciary to build High Courts in the remaining 7 counties, and Magistrate Courts in the remaining 123 sub-counties and support their ongoing digitization program.

“These interventions will empower the Judiciary to adjudicate and expeditiously conclude corruption cases, commercial disputes, and all other matters, thereby enhancing access to justice and efficiency in the Judiciary,” he said.

Furthermore, he has also said that he will today, Tuesday, September 13, sign over the National Police Service budget to be overseen by the Inspector General.

“I have instructed that the instruments conferring financial autonomy to National Police Service by transferring the budget from the office of the President and designating the Inspector General as accounting officer to be placed on my desk this afternoon.”

According to the president, the financial independence of the police will give impetus to the fight against corruption, and end the political weaponization of the criminal justice system.

Ruto has also assured all public officers to respect their professional service saying, “I assure all public officers that my administration will respect their professional service and no public servant even chiefs and their assistants will be required to run political errands for any political party or formation.”
