Ruto extends Maraga-led taskforce on police reforms for two months
President William Ruto has extended the term of the former Chief Justice David Maraga-led Police Reforms Taskforce for two months.
Speaking during the pass-out parade of the National Youth Service (NYS) officers in Gilgil, Ruto said that the extension was to give the team enough time to review the terms of service for NYS officers.
“This morning, I have instructed an extension of two months to be accorded to the taskforce so that they can also include the National Youth Service (NYS) to ensure that they join the other services in the review. This will ensure that they are included in the term of service. I look forward to that report,” announced Ruto.
The Maraga-led taskforce was initially tasked with reviewing the terms of service for officers under the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Prisons Service (KPS). The team was to finalize its report by the end of March 2023.
With the extension, the taskforce will now have until May 2023 to complete its work. The President’s directive is aimed at ensuring that the National Youth Service is included in the review of terms of service for security agencies.
Ruto reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving the living conditions of security agencies, including the National Youth Service. He expects to receive the taskforce’s report in the next two and a half months.
The Maraga-led taskforce comprises 20 members, including retired Chief Justice David Maraga as the Chairperson and Carole Kariuki as the Deputy Chairperson. The team is expected to identify the legal, policy, administrative, institutional, and operational constraints on effective service delivery by the NPS and KPS and recommend improvements in the terms and conditions of service.
The extension of the Maraga-led taskforce’s term is expected to provide comprehensive recommendations to improve the working conditions of security personnel in Kenya.
