Ruto calls for a new Public Health Order to safeguard Africa
President William Ruto has called for a new Public Health Order to ensure a health-secure Africa and better protect the continent from emerging and re-emerging health threats.
He made the statement during the inaugural Ministerial Forum on the Africa Centre for Disease Control (A-CDC) at the sidelines of the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union on February 18, 2023.
In his address, President Ruto highlighted the importance of a robust health sector and the need for inclusivity in global health conversations. He emphasized the significance of benefit sharing and the need to ensure that African countries benefit equally from technologies developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The New Public Health Order is necessary to safeguard our African Continent from a myriad of threats to health, reproductive rights, and socioeconomic security. It is even more essential to achieve health security in the face of emerging and re-emerging health threats such as COVID-19 and Ebola, among others,” President Ruto stated.
Ruto urged Ministers of Health to be more proactive and work closely with Africa Centre for Disease Control in finding solutions and establishing manufacturing facilities to identify health products for local manufacturing.
He challenged Ministers of Health to be more involved in the governance of Africa CDC and its activities to make it the organization of choice during disease outbreaks and health emergencies.
Ruto also called on fellow African leaders to keep a keen eye on Africa CDC to guide the continent’s health security agenda through the New Public Health Order. He expressed his appreciation to the African Union for their tireless efforts in bringing the initiative to fruition.
“I am confident that, through our collective efforts, we can build a more resilient and proactive health system for Africa,” Ruto concluded.
The New Public Health Order is set to ensure prevention and preparedness as key pillars in health service delivery, saving time, funds, and energy, which are scarce resources in health systems.
The establishment of local manufacturing facilities for diagnostics, therapeutics, vaccines, and Personal Protective Equipment will further boost Africa’s health security.
