Roysambu murder: Woman identified as JKUAT student Rita Waeni

The woman who was found murdered and her body dismembered in a short-stay rental in Roysambu has been identified as 20-year-old University student Rita Waeni.

In a statement on Wednesday, her family expressed the horror they endured hours before their kin was brutally murdered.

According to the family Spokesperson Lilian Mutea, Waeni was a fourth-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

“On Saturday, our daughter Rita Waeni Muendo left her aunt’s residence in Syokimau to meet with a friend. On Sunday, at 5.00am, her father received a message, delivered from her phone number, demanding a ransom of Sh500,000 within 24 hours for her release,” the family Spokesperson, Mutea, said.

She said the family reported the matter to the police and investigations began. Moments later, two messages were sent to the family demanding the ransom.

“Unfortunately, the family did not get further details about the ransom or an opportunity to explore this route. Additionally, some demands were made when she had already been murdered,” Mutea said.

“After a painful and futile search, working with the DCI, we positively identified our child, as the girl tragically murdered at the wake of Sunday morning at/or around Thika Road Mall, January 14. We believe she was lured by her killer, who also tried to extort money from her family, even after killing her.”

Mutea said the family is broken at the loss of Waeni, and especially the brutality of her murder.

“Her parents, siblings, and our entire family are yet to come to terms with this tragic event. Our daughter, Waeni, was an intelligent, smart girl beyond her age at the very start of her youth. She was a spirited and caring individual, known for her unwavering kindness, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room she entered.”

She highlighted that the family will be focussing on cherishing the precious memories they shared before the tragic murder.

On Tuesday, a man believed to be the main suspect in the murder of the lady was nabbed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as he was about to leave the country.

Neighbors of the short-term rental house were questioned by law enforcement, investigating whether any unusual noises were heard.

Initial suspicions indicate that the suspect may have drugged the victim before dismembering her body inside the booked residence’s bathroom.

“We highly suspect that the murderer drugged the lady before he ended her life. This happened inside the bathroom of that house which he had booked,” said the source.

Using fake documents and a phone number registered under a woman’s name, the suspect booked the room, managing to evade scrutiny.

In the days leading up to the incident, he was traced to Ruaka Sub-County until he relocated to Roysambu Area on Sunday, just hours before the tragic event.

Kasarani Sub-County police boss, Mr Joseph Muriuki, confirmed that three individuals had been arrested, with one captured at JKIA.
