Restoration of Nairobi River to begin at Ondiri Swamp: Nairobi River Commission
The commission set aside to clean Nairobi River will start from the source where it is Ondiri Swamp. This will assist in maintaining the flow of clean water, according to the PS Ministry Of Environment Eng Festus Ng’eno.
Ondiri swamp is in the process of being identified and registered under Ramsar Convention On Wetlands International Convention Treaty which recognises the protection of wetlands in the world to ensure it benefits from donor funds among the other six recognised sites in Kenya.
This is among the appeals made by the Friends of Ondiri as they launch their management plan that will ensure the swamp is maintained and protected.
To enable the cleaning of Nairobi River, NEMA has identified 144 illegal discharge areas. They plan to sue those who break the law by illegally dumping waste in the river; according to the director General Neema Mamo B Mamo they will take all those violating the law to court to ensure the cleaning process succeeds and give clean water to Nairobians
Most tributaries of Nairobi River are drying up because of the encroachment, and according to the Environment CEC for Kiambu County, David Kuria, they are setting up a policy of removing all the deep-rooted trees like Bluegum which has been planted along the river and enhancing planting of tree spices that conserve the environment.
