Residents alarmed as mystery helicopter spotted in insecurity-hit Baringo

Local leaders and residents in Baringo County have raised concerns about another blue helicopter hovering around bandit-prone villages in Baringo South.

They claimed that on several occasions they have seen the helicopter flying around the deserted villages occupied by armed criminals, landing and taking off a few minutes later.

They expressed concern that a few days after the helicopter is seen in the area, attacks by armed criminals are reported in the banditry prone villages.

They cited an instance where the helicopter was seen hovering around the bandit-occupied Loromoru on 19 October, and two days later an attack was staged in Kiserian village, killing one police reservist and injuring another.

Two days after the NPR attack, the criminals also descended on Kapindasum, where they attacked the General Service Unit (GSU) on a routine patrol before advancing on Kapindasum Primary School and the neighbouring GSU camp.

Baringo South MP Charles Kamuren questioned why the government was turning a blind eye to the said helicopter despite numerous complaints from locals since last year after a similar white helicopter was spotted several times in the area making similar landings in the desolate villages.

“I have received numerous reports that there is a helicopter that normally hovers around the deserted border villages now occupied by armed criminals and it was recently seen landing in Laramoru. We have reported the case and we want the government to tell us its owner, who should also write a statement as to why it is landing in such areas that the state has declared dangerous and disturbed,” said MP Kamuren.

“We are afraid that it is a private helicopter because from all indications it is not for the police or the military. A white helicopter used to land in the same area, but now the blue one has joined it. If we are not told who it is, we will conclude that it is a person who is profiting from these incessant attacks by supplying ammunition and firearms to the bandits,” he added.

Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematia also weighed in on the matter, insisting that the state urgently investigate the owner of the mysterious helicopter.

“There is a helicopter that comes to this area all the time and the locals here have reported the case several times. I suspect it belongs to one of us in the Assembly, we need this matter to be investigated and recorded in the Hansard that some leaders are beneficiaries of this perennial problem,” said Ms Jematia.

Senator William Cheptumo also raised concerns about the said helicopter.

“We are told that a blue helicopter landed in some villages in this region and three days later a series of attacks were reported in Kiserian and Kapindasum villages. We have also heard that on Thursday last week it landed in Laramoru, where locals fled 10 years ago, and later flew to Silale in Tiaty Sub-County, where it met another white helicopter. I want to call on the county intelligence officers to investigate this matter. We cannot be in a country where we are able to discover all these issues and you are not able to reveal who these people are. I want a thorough investigation and we want to know the owners of the two helicopters and who is behind this threat,” said Senator Cheptumo.

According to locals, the last time they saw the helicopter was on Wednesday morning when it reportedly landed at the Sosion River near the border village of Mukutani.

They also told the Nation that it usually flies very low when approaching the villages of Loromoru and Ramacha, which have become a haven for bandits.

Earlier last year, locals in the affected villages called on the government to urgently investigate the owner of another mysterious helicopter suspected of ferrying ammunition to the bandits wreaking havoc in the region.
