Repairing roads after floods will cost Kenya Sh37 billion, says CS Murkomen
The government yesterday said that restoration of roads damaged by rains is estimated to cost Sh37.3 billion. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen made the announcement after a performance review meeting with regional road directors at Bara Bara Plaza.
“Repairing the damage to roads and other transport infrastructure caused by El Nino last year and the recent flooding in the country will cost Sh37.3 billion,” said Mr Murkomen. The CS said the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) estimated that the roads will need Sh18.5 billion followed by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) at Sh9.7 billion and Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) roads to cost Sh9.1 billion, respectively.
He added that restoration of the damaged infrastructure has begun, starting with the most critical ones wherepeople are cut off, even as the ministry awaits allocation of funds in the next financial year. “We have also sought support from our development partners considering the extent of the damage,” he said.
He at the same time challenged the directors to find ways of achieving the best possible quality with the available resources. He said that the KeRRA roads without maintenance funds are a key concern to the Ministry, adding that his ministry will ensure the distribution of resources from the Roads Maintenance Levy that can go towards correcting this situation.
“I’m also in conversation with Parliament and the Treasury to secure increased allocation for road maintenance. I directed KeRRA to submit the total road network that has no maintenance allocation as well as roads that have been completely destroyed for corrective action by the Ministry,” he added. The CS said his ministry was allocated Sh43 billion against a pending bill of Sh165 billion in the ending financial year
Sh1 billion
Mr Murkomen could not, however, state how many kilometres of roads were damaged and when the works were set to be completed. He said there are plans to put in place mitigating measures to avert future occurrences.
A statement from State House yesterday said following floods that destroyed infrastructure, Sh1 billion has been allocated for emergency rehabilitation of roads. According to the Kenya Red Cross, 274,410 people are still displaced following the flooding in the country, with 38 others unaccounted for as of two weeks ago. With sporadic mudslides across the country, the number of those injured stands at 188, with fatalities from the floods now at 314 people.
