Remembering Prof. George Magoha: An esteemed educationist and surgeon
It was a day of mourning and tribute as the country said farewell to one of its most respected figures in education and health, Professor George Albert Omore Magoha.
Leaders of various levels of government current and former gathered at Maseno University, Odera Akang’o Campus in Yala town for the funeral service of the late CS.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who first met Prof. Magoha when he was the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, said, “He was a man who was not interested in positions but in what he could do with the position he had. He usually spoke his mind without fear.”
President William Ruto described Prof. Magoha as “a good man, a loyal servant of the Republic, highly accomplished Scholar and a great teacher who gave sound leadership everywhere he worked.”
Azimio leader Raila Odinga said, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Prof. George Magoha, a transformational leader, illustrious scholar, dedicated public servant, and distinguished medical doctor who left an indelible mark on our country’s education system.”
Magoha’s contributions to the country are immeasurable. He worked to develop a curriculum for universities that has now been emulated by other countries, and he took the challenge of refreshing the country’s curriculum to help its children face future challenges. Magoha was a man committed to education and saw everyone as a brother, regardless of colour or tribe.
Dr. Michael Magoha, eulogized his father saying, “My father believed everyone was the same but politics made everyone not be the best version of themselves. We all have big shoes to fill. Wherever you go be honest, try your best, upset people but be forthright… give everybody an equal chance; if you do that you’d honouring my father.”
