Azimio la Umoja party leader Raila Odinga has criticised President William Ruto’s inaugural budget.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Raila said the proposed Finance Bill 2023 contains a “tsunami of taxes” that will “bury everyone”.
Raila says the proposed Finance Bill 2023 is “bad for the country and should therefore be rejected”.
He added that taxing earnings from digital content is bad for the youths- the hustlers as is taxing per diems, increasing VAT on petroleum products to 16 percent.
The Opposition Chief proposed an immediate stoppage on “nonessential officers like CAS, aides who are gobbling finances and unnecessary travels among others”.
In the Finance Bill, 2023, released on Thursday last week, the National Treasury proposes a three percent deduction on the basic salary towards housing development.
“An employer shall pay to the National Housing Development Fund in respect of each employee, the employer’s contribution at three percent of the employee’s monthly basic salary and the employee’s contribution at three percent of the employee’s monthly basic salary,” the Bill proposes.
Both the employer’s and the employee’s contributions are, however, capped at a collective Sh5,000 per month.
This is the latest proposed deduction to be introduced to the pay slip this year, after the rise of pension contributions from Sh200 to 6 percent of an employee’s basic salary, following the passing of the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), 2013.
