Raila terms suspension of IEBC Commissioners dictatorial
Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition leader Raila Odinga has termed the suspension of four IEBC commissioners as dictatorial and a conspiracy to rig the 2027 General Election.
The ODM leader also took issue with the new formula for appointing the electoral body’s commissioners passed by parliament on Thursday, December 1, adding it is not about integrity.
He reiterated that Azimio Coalition would not sit back and allow the government to remove the four commissioners from office.
“The events in parliament yesterday on the formula of appointing IEBC Commissioners and the hounding of the 4 Commissioners has got nothing to do with integrity, but about 2027. Ruto wants to rig the 2027 election in 2022. We should not allow this to happen,” the former Prime minister said on Friday.
Raila’s comments came shortly after President William Ruto suspended Cherera and commissioners Irene Masit, Francis Wanderi, and Justus Nyang’aya in response to a recommendation from the National Assembly.
Odinga insisted that he will lead his supporters in a public discussions forum at the ancient Kamukunji grounds beginning on December 7.
The ODM Leader also opposed a planned measure in Parliament to change the method for selecting IEBC commissioners.
Azimio also announced intentions to host a rally at the aforementioned location on December 12 in conjunction with the national Jamhuri Day celebrations.
“On December 7, we will launch the public consultations forum at the historical Kamkunji grounds. And we will return to the same grounds on December 12 to continue with the consultations,” Raila stated.
On Thursday, Parliament burned the midnight oil to pass the recommendations to remove the four IEBC commissioners, as well as radical amendments to the law governing the panel that will select, interview, and select the next IEBC commissioners.
Legislators gave minority parties a voice in the selection process.
Following the approval, the Political Parties Liaison Committee, which serves as the umbrella body for all political parties, will now have one seat on the selection panel.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wa introduced the IEBC (Amendment) Bill, 2022.
